Katana Swords Make A Better Hero
Whether it’s with katana swords or any other kind, there’s just something about a sword fighter that makes him more of a hero. Maybe it’s the proximity of the weapon. That is to say, a gun fighter can certainly be a strong, heroic character, but he or she is also capable of taking out the bad guy at a hundred paces or more. Something like that can certainly come off as unsporting like.
But put some katana swords in the good guy’s hands, and all of a sudden it’s a duel. Good versus evil. Right versus wrong. Mano a mano. May the best one win. The one with the cause that’s most just, that is. Very few of us want to see injustice prevail in our entertainment. I suppose there’s enough of that in the real world around us.
From the light sabers of “Star Wars” to the cutlass held in the hand of Captain Jack Sparrow to the rapier that the Dread Pirate Roberts once brandished to the katana swords of Seven Samurai, the most dashing, memorable heroes seem to choose swordplay as their favorite method of defense against the evil that invariably surrounds them.
They go through their adventures embracing the concept of fairness to all, deserving or not, and trust in their causes. Perhaps it’s so attractive in movies because we all realize that the heroes of the real world would rarely survive taking such chances. That there are more often shades of gray to them. And actions taken simply to ensure their own safety. That causes outside of the silver screen are frequently too important to allow for fair play.
Katana swords and the mindset behind them may be best left to fantasy these days. So, it’s just a good thing that they do so well there is all.
