We’re All Toys R Us Kids
Who among us of a certain age doesn’t remember that bit of marketing genius that put the tune in our heads. I don’t want to grow up, I’m a Toys R Us kid. That coupled with Geoffrey, their giraffe mascot, got us hook, line, and sinker.
I remember the excitement involved of a planned trip to Toys R Us with my parents. It was an event then, more so than parties, going to movies, or even travel became when I grew older. It beats all of that in my memory, hands down. Maybe it’s just part of being young. Maybe it’s why the idea of childhood captivates so many. Because things that are so simple to us now were pure magic for us then. And like the joy of your first few Christmases, it can never truly be recaptured. And it can’t be overshadowed by any other experiences either.
They managed to take a simple toys store to another level, and with a giraffe and a song, make it something more to many. The idea is the same one touted by the likes of Peter Pan and his Lost Boys. We are obsessed with a time when things were simpler. I don’t want to grow up. Too bad we all have to. The most we can hope for is to retain a small piece of what was once there.
So, do yourself a favor, and stop by Toys R Us to have a look around. Pick things up. Play. If you happen to live near New York City, the one in Times Square has a ferris wheel inside it. Have a ride. Especially if you’re over thirty.
