As many of you may already be aware, last week there were two strange incidents that happened in very close proximity to one another. There were fish, as well as birds dying in Arkansas. And I don’t mean a couple here and there. It started when, roughly 100,000 dead fish washed up on the banks of the Arkansas river. Just 100 miles away, and not too long after, 4,000 birds fell out of the sky. What could possibly cause these events?

There are several theories. The official explanation is that an outbreak of disease killed the fish and the birds simply hit something very hard and fell to their deaths after possibly being startled by fireworks. The more colorful explanations that have been popping up range from secret government weapons tests, to a side effect of an alien invasion, to a sign of the end of days. With the last being a very popular notion.

But why is that? Where did anyone get the idea that some fish and birds dying in Arkansas is a sign that the Apocalypse is upon us? The Bible, you say? Nope, it’s not anywhere in there. Nothing about fish and birds. It is, however, in nine out of ten Hollywood blockbusters about the end of the world. Dead fish rising to the top of the water and birds crashing to earth are generally the first two signs. Then something about locusts.

It’s funny how movies and pop culture can so effectively ingrain things into our minds, rewriting even something as important to many as their religion, and in this case, causing a small hysteria. This is what the end is supposed to look like, courtesy of Michael Bay.

Some fish and birds dying in Arkansas does not mean our days are numbered, at least not by any measure that I know of aside from what will play well at the box office this weekend. As for aliens, government black ops, or simply disease, that is for each person to decide for themselves. How much of a conspiracy theory do you enjoy?

Personally all it means to me is that weird crap goes on in Arkansas.
